- The Way of the World. The Price of Loyalty and The One Percent Doctrine. His latest book is an exposé of how both the Bush and Blair governments knew that Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction, but none the less still went to wa: The gist of Suskind's case is twofold. First, he maintains that a MI6 officer named Shipster met the head of Iraqi intelligence, in Amman in the early days of 2003, and that Habbush assured Shipster that Iraq possessed no active nuclear, chemical, biological or other weapons of mass destruction. Suskind tells us that shortly before the invasion of Iraq, Sir Richard Dearlove, then the MI6 chief, flew to Washington to brief Tenet, about this and that he immediately briefed Bush. The second of Suskind's 'bombshel l' claims is that the White House later forged a letter, back-dated to 1 July 2001 and purporting to be from Habbush to Saddam. In the letter, Habbush supposedly told Saddam that Mohamed Atta, the leader of the 9/11 terrorists, had trained for his mission in Iraq. Just such a letter turned up in Dec 2003, leading a Telegraph reporter to tell NBC viewers that his scoop was 'really concrete proof that al-Qaeda was working with Saddam',

- In Their Own Words An Extremely Abridged History of the George W. Bush Presidency: End On Dec 18, [2002], ten days after Saddam's declaration [to the UN denying that Iraq has WMD] Bush discussed it with his National Security Council. Powell led off, reporting that [chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans] Blix saw gaps in the Iraqi documents. All the Security Council members "recogniz e there are problems with the declaration,&q uot; Powell reported, though the British did not want to call it a material breach. "I have no problem calling it a material breach," Powell announced, without explaining why, or what that would signify. Half-stating, half-asking, Bush responded, "It' s clear that Saddam is not cooperating.&q uot; "That 9;s right," Powell confirmed. The President took this as a grave judgement, and his face showed it. "That 9;s a significant statement,&quo t; he said. "It means it's the beginning of the end for the guy." -- Feith,. - £1bn-a-year cost of war in Iraq 'would be better spent on NHS hospitals' - Politics, News - Belfasttelegra ph.co.uk: The increases for the Iraq defence bill in the past few months includes a rise of £56m for military personnel and an extra £52m in equipment support costs and other costs. However, infrastructure costs have dropped £17m. In 2003, when the invasion took place, Britain spent £1.3bn on defence in Iraq but it fell back in 2004 to £910m. Hans Blix, the former United Nations arms inspector, claimed yesterday that the invasion was "clearly illegal". Mr Blix said. "There were question marks [over the evidence of WMD] but they changed them to exclamation marks," Mr Blix told Sky News. He accused America of a "witch-hu nt" to justify the war.

- North Korea Broadens Bar on Inspectors: North Korea increased the pressure on the Bush administration to conclude a deal on dismantling the country?s plutonium program, barring international inspectors from the entirety of its Yongbyon nuclear complex and announcing that it is preparing to restart the facility.
- Bipartisan Policy Center's Paper on Iran -- National Review Online: Sen. Coats and Sen. Robb's bipartisan task force study of U.S. policy toward Iranian nuclear development is now out. It goes beyond the traditional think tank or Council on Foreign Relations study group in that it recognizes that diplomacy, even if the favored option of Washington, may not work and can do real harm. If diplomacy doesn't work, the report provides a cascade of ever more robust further options. The BPC study also looks at both containment and deterrence as military strategies for which there must be preparation beyond just the rhetoric of a lameduck White House or presidential campaign.

- Q&A: When Intelligence Is Used Unintelligentl y - Hans Blix: I think that while these threats are highly significant, I would not necessarily say that they are the greatest threats. At the moment, there is the growing tension that we have had between Russia and the U.S. Both the U.S. and Russia have a common interest in keeping world trade going and in handling the threat to the planet. The current level of (military spending comes to) 1.3 trillion dollars and over half of that is American. If half of that could be used for the protection of the planet, it would be very good.
